Tops Day Nurseries celebrate plastic free July

Tops Day Nurseries, recent winners of a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, have spent the last month promoting the importance of reducing the amount of plastic they use for Plastic Free Month.

Tops Day Nurseries are passionate about reducing their environmental impact to protect the future of the younger generation. This means they avoid buying any one-use plastics including cling film, carrier bags, food bags, aprons, and wet wipes throughout their nurseries. As well as this, they actively communicate with politicians, manufacturers, retailers, and waste handling organisations to make their concerns heard, on behalf of the children.

It is from these efforts and many more that Tops Day Nurseries were the first day nursery chain in the UK to achieve B Corp certification and were also recently awarded a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, for providing inspiration and are genuinely driving change to the Early Years sector.

Tops Day Nurseries have nurseries in Dorset, Hampshire, Plymouth, Somerset, and Wiltshire. Activities were set up across Tops to teach children about sea animals and the effects plastic has on them and the ocean. One activity had the children identifying different sea animals and they were tasked with trying to save them from the plastic and ropes that were trapping them.

Simon Evans, senior nursery manager at Tops Day Nurseries said: “At Tops we believe it is important to teach the children about looking after our planet, one of the ways we do this is by teaching them about one use plastic and the effect it has on the planet and nature. The children are keen to learn about looking after our planet in a fun way and enjoy taking part in a range of different activities”.

Tops Day Nurseries have over 30 nurseries across the South and Southwest. The eco-sustainable childcare provider offers early education and care for children aged 3 months to school age, as well as before, after-school and holiday clubs for children up to 11.
