Tops Day Nurseries promote importance of reading in the early years throughout share a story month

Tops Day Nurseries have spent the last month promoting the importance of reading in the early years by taking part in a number of events and activities to celebrate share a story month.

Share a Story Month is an annual event running throughout May, organised by The Federation of Children’s Book Groups (FCBG). Tops Day Nurseries, actively encourage reading in the early years and understand the value of reading at a young age. Which is why they used this month as an opportunity to share the importance of reading with parents, children and the wider community.

Tops Day Nurseries focused on storytelling using props and other toys to build the children’s imagination and to help them to follow the story being told. Some stories that were read during Share a Story Month, included, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Walking Through The Jungle, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Rod the Cod read by the author himself, Ian Woolley, to the children at Tops Lymington.

Katarzyna Stunt, regional manager at Tops said: “Storytelling should be an amazing experience for every child. It is a very important and crucial part of the daily routine where the children are exposed to the written materials, and it must be attractive and exciting. Storytelling time should be celebrated and be very special, it should be well-prepared activity by the teacher so the children can fully enjoy the experience. One of the main tasks of the Early Years is to build a love for literacy and help the children to build their imagination. The skilful storyteller will know how to create the opportunity for each child to fully experience and at the same time challenge and develop their skills. Storytelling should grow with the children and be full of props, theatrics and children’s individual involvement”.
