dot2dot are calling on all nursery settings to take part in a SEND survey to raise awareness of the challenges providers are facing
Over the past year there as been an increased volume of SEND children attending nurseries. This has led to additional strains on the sector and the difficult decisions that many nurseries are having to make when they realise they can’t accommodate more of those children.
It is difficult to quantify the full extent of the challenge nurseries are facing, as the data available has only been national research into SEND children schools and there is no large scale, publicly accessible view of the issues faced.
The key stats from the data so far include:
- 83% of respondents have seen an increase in SEND children in nursery
- 40% of respondents have seen a 10-25% increase
- 47% are not confident in managing the risk of SEND children
- 58% have had no specific risk assessment training
- 80% have seen an increase in food allergies
- 40% have concerns re the Equality Act
- 38% have lost staff due to SEND stress.
