LEYF rolls out digital game which teaches children to make healthy food choices

The Wonder of Me game: “The Change Tree” is now being adopted across a further three LEYF nurseries.

This is following a successful trial of the game at Pembury Nursery & Pre-School in Hackney (part of the London Early Years Foundation / LEYF).

Combining educational classroom activities with dedicated time on a digital game, children between the ages of 3-5 years old learn how making healthy choices using specially developed gaming characters. The activities and conversations that surround this game allow the child to relate the choices to their own life and their own personal choices.

Having run an initial pilot (pre-Covid) in Wales, this second pilot at Pembury Nursery sought to reinforce initial learning and introduce newly developed “supporting activities” to make the game even more relevant to daily lives.

Edna Kissmann, chief exec of The Wonder of Me, said: “It is heartening to see that the introduction of the supporting activities (which are all designed with behaviour change experts) has bridged the gap between home and school.”

“This, plus evidence from the pilot that children are now making healthier choices both at home and school allows us to work towards scaling the approach across the additional three LEYF nurseries and then across the sector more widely.”

June O’Sullivan, chief exec of London Early Years Foundation added: “Action research is at the very heart of how teachers at LEYF deepen their learning which enables us to provide the very best outcomes for our children. Whilst this research project will help us strengthen our understanding about how children make healthy choices, it will also become part of the many learning threads that interweave to form the LEYF pedagogy. This allows us to deliver excellent teaching and wonderful experiences for our children.”
