Greater Manchester launches early years support
The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has launched a package of support for early years workers.
GM Reflect is a training and support package which aims to strengthen the skills and knowledge of those working across the early years workforce in Greater Manchester.
It is aimed at those working in settings such as early education and childcare, health services for pregnancy and early years, and voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise providers.
Resources include:
- An outline of the essential skills, knowledge, and abilities for those working with children from conception to age five.
- A digital self-evaluation tool to identify skills and areas for growth.
- Free, open-access e-learning modules created in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University, covering social and emotional development and wellbeing , engaging with families and physical development.
- Case studies demonstrating best practices.
- Policy alignment documents to ensure GM Reflect supports national early years priorities.
Mark Hunter, Greater Manchester lead for children and young people, said GM Reflect was a “game changer” for early years professionals.
He said: “This is the first initiative of its kind, offering high-quality, accessible training and resources that strengthen the workforce and enhance early years support. By investing in our professionals, we’re not just upskilling individuals—we’re shaping a brighter future for the next generation across Greater Manchester.”
Melanie Hall, childhood and education studies senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: “We really want GM Reflect to be used by both people on the frontline of working with children and families, as well as those in wider support roles. These resources are designed to build upon existing experience and extend knowledge, contributing to the development of a skilled and confident early years workforce.”
Additional e-learning modules covering topics such as Pre-birth & Early Days, Speech, Language and Communication, and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) will be released in the coming months.
